Summary: it's all about
Comment: the music. Stage or movie, the music makes this a keeper. Last year I watched my 16 yr old daughter run sound at a college theater camp for highschoolers, the 1st act was "What's the Buzz" from JCS. I almost started crying. This movie always makes my top five. Ted Neely's voice alone makes the movie worthwhile, despite the competition from Carl Andersen. I leave all the religious psycho-babble to others.

Summary: Review from a woman's heart
Comment: I have to disagree with the "wimpy" comment for the Amazon review. Ted Neeley is not "wimpy" in the role of Jesus. To borrow a line from the movie the reviewer does not "understand what power is".

We were able to see Mr. Neeley perform JCS live recently and he's still amazing at 64, even better than the movie performance. He has a rare gift and I hope his light continues to shine on stage for many years to come.

Summary: A Masterful Story of The Superstar
Comment: A masterful movie telling the story of Jesus in a different light from the gospels. Christian and non-Christian alike, if one considers the movie as art and not just a story, will find themselves examining their own perception of Jesus. From the garden of Gethsemane to Judas' and Mary Magdelene's own questions, you get a new window into what might have happened beyond the sometimes simplified story of his life in the Bible.

Oh, and the music is fantastic! As other reviewers have stated Neely's voice may not be as powerful as others, per se, but I feel it is perfect for the part. His range and passion in singing is incredible.

Summary: Life Changing
Comment: After over 300 reviews there's nothing I could add technically to sway anybody one way or the other on this film. So I'll just say that personally speaking, I saw this movie in the theatre in 1973 and my life was forever changed. I probably have seen it at least a dozen times and will see it at least a few more before I die. I can't think of any other film I can say that about.

I almost died of shock a few years back while watching reruns of the old Ed Sullivan Show and saw a band called The Teddy Nealy Five! Yes it was a short haired "Jesus" singing the standard 'Going Out Of My Head' or something just as preposterous. The performance pretty much sucked! It kind of "humanized" the actor for me.

Summary: GREAT MOVIE!!!
Comment: Enjoyed this movie very much. Ted Neely made a wonderful Jesus Christ. The soundtrack was moving and awesome. Really loved the part of Herrod and the song Jesus sang in the Garden. 5 stars all the way :D

Editorial Reviews:

Ted Neeley makes for a wimpy looking Jesus in Norman Jewison's screen adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice "rock opera," which was a smash on stage in the early '70s. Jewison (Other People's Money) adds some good exterior settings in the desert, but Lloyd Webber and Rice's dialogue-free story (everything is sung, as in a real opera), with its quasi-profundities about the inner demons of principal figures in the life of Christ, is the real hook. Yvonne Elliman sings the show's best-known song, "I Don't Know How to Love Him." --Tom Keogh
