Comment: We love this movie. Such a classic. My kids love it too. They don't make musicals like this any more. This was a fun edition because it had the anniversary interviews with some of the actors. They're much older now but it was fun to see them back together again talking about the movie.

From the very first moments in the movie you can't help but be dazzled by the breathtaking scenery and the marvelous sound of the music as Julie Andrews rushes across the hills singing "The Sound of Music." It's no wonder it's a classic - as it well deserves to be! It's my all-time favorite movie! And, if I could, I would gladly give it 10 stars! This movie is definitely on "My Favorite Things" list!
Julie Andrews - what an incredible voice she had! - gives the performance of her career as Maria, a young, soon-to-be nun who becomes the govorness to Captain von Trapp's (Christopher Plummer) seven children.
For "Sound of Music" or musical fans, I highly recommend this 40th. Anniversary Edition DVD! They have alot of extra features - singalongs, commentaries, photo gallery, interviews with Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer and the actors who played the seven von Trapp children. They also have a biography on the real von Trapp family.

This is one of those musicals you can't watch without singing along with!

Shot in Salzburg against the majestic Bavarian Alps, THE SOUND OF MUSIC is considered one of the greatest screen musicals ever made. Winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director (Robert Wise), the film, based on a real family and their true events, tells the story of a young postulate, Maria (Julie Andrews), who, after proving too high-spirited for the Mother Abess and other nuns, is sent off to work as a governess to seven unruly children. The Von Trapp family is run, in military style, by the seemingly cold-hearted Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer), a lonely widowed naval officer. Seeing how badly he and his children need companionship, he proposes to the Baroness Schraeder (Eleanor Parker), a calculating, mutual friend of beloved family friend Max Detweiler (Richard Haydn). It is the baroness who soon realizes that it's Maria--with her warmth and love for the children--the captain really loves. It is nearly bliss for the newly formed family who loves to sing together--except for the cloud looming over their beloved Austrian horizon: Hitler is ascending to power, forcing Von Trapp to decide whether to join the Nazi party--which he loathes--or force his family to leave their home forever.
