Customer Rating: Summary: One of the best literary adaptations there is Comment: I'm a lit-head and I often cringe at how classic literature is portrayed on screen. This rendition of "Jane Eyre" is excellent and despite a few soap-opera moments of expressed passion, the characters are faithfully presented. I highly recommend seeing this version of the book. But, of course, nothing quite beats the novel.
Customer Rating: Summary: Breathtaking Comment: I was completely enraptured with this movie right from the beginning. It is very dark and moody - just exactly how it should be! The acting is wonderful, the music is fantastic, the costumes are gorgeous...I loved everything about this movie. I saw it first on Masterpiece Theater, but just had to have my own copy to watch again and again.
Customer Rating: Summary: THE ONLY VERSION OF JANE EYRE THAT I LIKE! Comment: One night, I was fortunate enough to have stumbled upon a re-airing of this Jane Eyre version. The first few minutes already captured my attention. But it was after the first encounter between Jane and Mr. Rochester that made me realize that there's something different about this version.
I haven't read the book, but I was always curious about JANE EYRE. I tried watching other versions, but they all bored me. I was never drawn to the characters until this version came along. Ruth's Jane and Toby's Mr. Rochester had chemistry!
Some criticized this version for not being entirely true to the novel. May I say to those individuals that not only did I purchase this DVD after watching the movie on PBS, I also bought the book.
Customer Rating: Summary: Breathtaking Comment: I am completely haunted by this version. It was all I could think about. I have never experienced an emotional attachment to a movie as I have this. Ruth Wilson's pain and heartbreak as Jane was so convincing I felt physical pain. Toby Stephen's as Rochester has left me completely obsessed with him. It's amazing to watch him evolve from the dark and tortured bachelor to the carrying, still tortured by secrets man, who falls in love with Jane. He physically changes when he is with her. I watched some portion of it everyday for a week after I bought it because I could not get enough of Rochester. This is definitely my favorite adaptation - Toby and Ruth were superb.
Customer Rating: Summary: Marvelous Comment: I won't bother with a recap of the story--it's too delicious for that. My mother gave me Jane Eyre, the novel, when I was in middle school and I loved it. I loved the details, the imagery, Jane's inner thoughts, the subtle humor, and, of course, the relationship between Jane and Mr. Rochester. One read and Bronte's story embedded itself into my memory. When I heard that BBC did an adaptation of the novel, I had to see it and when I did I fell in love all over again.
This film is gorgeous. The cast is gorgeous. The acting is spot on. This interpretation of a novel is the best I've seen since that of the classic Pride and Prejudice (you know what I'm talking about). It's as faithful as it can be, and the passion between Jane and Rochester is...just awesome. Some may say that some scenes are too modern for 1800s England, but let's be real--these are people, in love, passionate by nature. Can we reasonably expect them to wait to kiss or for Rochester to touch her in some provocative way until Jane Eyre is Jane Rochester?
The DVD itself is packaged without much fanfare, the main menu is minimal and there isn't that much in way of special features, but the film makes up for that. I do think the Masterpiece Theatre should release these dramatizations like how BBC Video released North and South. It's more eye-catching.
