Customer Rating: Summary: A movie for everyone. Comment: Let me preface this by saying that 9 times out of ten i ABHOR musicals. HATE THEM. I gave this a shot only because my boyfriend brought it home.
Guess what? This is one of my favorite movies, hands-down. Ever. I was totally blown away by it. I laughed, I cried (and so did my partner - suffice it to say that after realizing he cried at movies, I fell in love - and perhaps I might be a little biased about this movie because of that). I was thoroughly impressed not just by the musical segments (yeah, truly!) but by the storyline, too.
Buy it, rent it, watch it, love it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Possibly the worst movie ever . . . Comment: One would think that the creation of a movie based on the music of the Beatles would be a good idea. And, in fact, it was . . . see A Hard Day's Night or even Yellow Submarine. Although some of the music was well-done in ATU, the plot was very loosely pieced together. Add somewhat psychadelic cinematography to the mediocre acting and dialogue and chunk hurling will ensue!
If only it carried on the tale of those curse-wielding cowboys of the cosmos Memsahib Duran so accurately portrayed in her critically acclaimed The Duke of Shadows?
Customer Rating: Summary: Spend your money on something worthwhile... Comment: I am so glad I didn't waste my money on this worthless "film".
Being a Beatles fan, I was absolutely offended by this. The Beatles would be offended by this. John Lennon is rolling over in his grave right now.
I went into this movie wanting so badly to enjoy it, but I left wanting that hour and half of my life back. Yes, that is correct, I couldn't even finish it. I got to the Eddie Izzard "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite" scene where he is the leader of a carnival, and I had to turn it off because I couldn't breathe I was laughing so hard.
The overall only enjoyment I got out of this movie was a bellyache from laughing so hard at this ongoing joke of a "film".
Don't waste your money on this movie. If you still want to see it, borrow it from a friend, but save your money for a movie that is really worth buying.
End note: If I had a time machine, I would go back into time and stop myself from wasting any time on this horrid movie.
Customer Rating: Summary: Can't stop the music... Comment: Although I had to fast forward through the war and riots after the first time I saw ATU, I proceeded to watch it five times in four days (a first for me). And now I'll buy it. While I did, in fact, live through the events portrayed (and recognize the obvious, sad parallels to the world we're living in today), in the interest of full disclosure, I'm a HUGE fan of the genre, so my review is skewed! "All That Jazz" is my second favorite movie of all time and this one sweetly surpasses the hallucinatory aspects of that classic. On a personal level, the voices and faces of the young stars reflect faces and stories I knew in the day, so it's a bittersweet but beautiful trip back to the times that made me who I am. It allows me to feel like the young hippie chick I was so long ago, but mellowed (and, gratefully, strengthened) with the wisdom of age. Why buy it? Buy it to watch Jim Sturgess sing "Girl". Buy it to cry through "Let it Be" if you've got ANY unresolved issues. Buy it to fall in love with Sturgess, Fuchs, Woods, Anderson and McCoy like you did with George, John, Paul and Ringo. Sweet dreams!
Customer Rating: Summary: Experience 'ATU', you won't regret it Comment: Simply outstanding; this could be one of my favorite musicals ever. And I love musicals! I was never a big fan of the Beatles; but this movie's versions of the songs are truly beautiful and heartfelt. They made me go back and listen to the Beatles' songs, which gained new depth. Visuals are great and the cast is marvelous. I hope Jim Sturgess has a great future ahead of him.
P.S. I like the fact that Sony put subtitles in various languages, including Portuguese, on the DVD/Blu-Ray. It was definitely a nice addition.

Set in America during the Vietnam War, Across the Universe is a powerful love story set against a backdrop of political and social unrest: it's a story of soul-searching, self-doubt, and individual powerlessness cleverly conveyed through a multitude of Beatles songs. Like young adults all across America during the 1960's, Jude (Jim Sturgess), Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood), Max (Joe Anderson), Sadie (Dana Fuchs), Prudence (T.V. Carpio), and JoJo (Martin Luther) are in turmoil over the war; questioning their individual roles in the war effort and struggling to find a way to hold true to their beliefs while making a difference in the world. While love proves a powerful uniting force, its limitations become clear as relationships are strained and broken over individual perceptions of responsibility to cause and country. A fairly bizarre juxtaposition of extremely stylized, almost hallucinogenic scenes of swirling colors and reflections, highly choreographed dance segments, seemingly commonplace character interaction, and emotionally packed close-up footage of characters lost in contemplative song, this film imparts a good sense of the confusion and passion of the time and is at once powerful, invigorating, and disturbing. The film runs a bit long at 2-hours 11-minutes and several segments drag noticeably thanks to some incredibly slow song tempos. Warning: this production may change how you think about a favorite Beatles song forever. --Tami Horiuchi Beyond Across the Universe On Blu-ray | The Deluxe Soundtrack | Beatles audio CD | Stills from Across the Universe (click for larger image)
